Despite mild temps, Canaan ski area keeps 19 runs, trails open

Thanks to an early cold spell, Canaan Valley Resort's ski area is operating 19 downhill runs and trails despite milder-than-normal temperatures, according to Steve Drumheller, general manager for the highland resort.

“We expect to have mild days between our cold spells, so we take every advantage we can to make snow in abundance whenever possible and worked hard in the early season to prepare for this scenario,” Drumheller said.

“Early-season snowstorms and our pro-active snow-making strategy have allowed us to preserve a healthy base until the next blast of cold air comes our way and we can resume snow-making.”

Drumheller noted that temperatures are forecast to turn cold again by mid-week.

The current base ranges from 24 to 36 inches, and three of the area’s four lifts are running.
The ski area made several major enhancements in recent years, including doubling its snow-making capacity with the additions of snow guns and compressors.

Drumheller said runs now open at the resort range from beginner to advanced and include the one-and-a-quarter-mile Timber Trail as well as Valley Vista and Upper Spruce from the top of the mountain.

The most recently opened resort trail is Weiss Meadows 1, so skiers can also ride the Meadows, he said.

The Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area opened for the season December 15 and will operate through March 17, 2019. The hill opens daily at 9 a.m.
