State tree nursery to begin selling container trees Feb. 1

Clements State Tree Nursery is taking orders for container trees, which will be available Feb. 1, weather permitting, according to West Virginia forestry officials.

Located along the Ohio River near Mason, West Virginia, the nursery is owned and operated by the state Division of Forestry and produces and sells bare-root seedlings to landowners in West Virginia for wildlife cover, reforestation, coal-mine reclamation, and Christmas-tree production.

The container trees are a new addition at Clements, according to Nursery Superintendent Jason Huffman.

“We’ll have close to the same species we have as the seedlings,” Huffman said. “But unlike the seedlings, which are sold in bulk orders of 25 or more, there is no minimum order for the container trees.”

Most of the species are native to West Virginia and are genetically suitable for success in West Virginia and in neighboring states. Species available include red oak, sugar maple, sycamore, and white pine.

Orders can be placed online. Container trees must be picked up at the nursery; however, shipping may be available for large orders. Call the nursery to arrange pickup.
