    Forestry officials seek information on Coopers Rock forest fire

    Officials with the West Virginia Division of Forestry are seeking information from the public regarding a wildfire that occurred in the Clay Run area of Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown, West Virginia.

    The cause of the fire is officially undetermined at this time. The division's Special Operations Unit and Region 1 personnel are actively collecting information and investigating the cause.

    The blaze was reported Tuesday, March 23, at around 6 p.m. and burned an estimated 30 acres before it was brought under control.

    Coopers Rock State Forest features public hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and some of the state’s most iconic views.

    Anyone with credible information about the March 23 fire in Coopers Rock State Forest is encouraged to call 1-800-233-FIRE or fill out the online form at .

    Specific information and the ability to follow up with the caller are beneficial. Callers may also contact the WVDOF Region 1 Farmington Office weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 304-825-6983.

    Many of the shelters and other structures in the state forest were built by Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Eleven of these structures have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
