Thanksgiving travel to rebound in West Virginia in 2022

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Over the river and through the woods, more than 265,000 West Virginians are expected to travel more than 50 miles from their homes this Thanksgiving, according to a report from American Automobile Association.

The association reports that travel for the holiday is around 98 percent of what the forecast called for in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic erupted.

With 91 percent of West Virginians driving to their destinations, they will also face higher gas prices, which the AAA says are around 30 cents more in West Virginia than in 2021.

The national gas price currently is $3.66, and the average in West Virginia is $3.55.

The association also expects that approximately 17,830 West Virginians will take to the skies to make it to their destinations— a seven percent increase from 2021.

The largest increases include bus and train transportation, which is up more than 20 percent from 2021.
